Judy - Me'ever la'keshetique.

Best musical moment in the history of film. Torch singing may not hold a candle to opera or jazz, but this is the one exception. Transcendent.

Just follows legendary performer Judy Garland as she arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts. I like Judy Garland so the thought of a film about her brought excitement. And with Renée Zellweger as the lead, who wasn't excited. We all knew she could perform and act after her performance in Chicago. Let me tell you, that woman can act. Give her an Oscar! She makes this film. She sounds like Judy Garland (both talking and singing) she looks like Judy Garland, she was Judy Garland. I loved her relationship with everyone in the cast. Her assistant in London, played by the amazing Jessie Buckley (who should also be nominated for an Oscar for Wild Rose) was my favorite relationship. They worked well together and I loved their scenes. Jessie Buckley was very good in this as well. She tries to put Judy's life together in the short time that she's there. I thought that the film put good insight of how she became the woman that she did when she grew up. The Wizard of Oz really screwed her over. They incorporate flashbacks back to her childhood and I think that was a great addition. Darci Shaw plays young Judy and I think she'll go places. I thought for the short amount of screen time she had, she was fantastic. The flashback scenes were cool to me since there was the whole set for The Wizard of Oz and I think the production design looked beautiful and there were cool cinematography choices, also with the present scenes. There's extravagant costume designs and fun musical numbers. My favorite scene in the whole film is at her last performance they show. It was so emotional and Zellweger says a line that just made me tear up. That's when I wanted her to really win the Oscar. It's a gripping story. I think there were some issues with storytelling. With switching between the past and present, some edits didn't make a whole lot of sense and felt random. It also had a side story with two men that was a little weird. It brought up some social issues which was good but wasn't really relevant to the story until later on. Other than those little things, I think this is a well done film. It shines mostly with acting. The story, though had some issues, is really emotionally gripping. The relationship she has with everyone, especially her kids, really helped. I would really recommend Judy.

Ich kenne rund 80 % der Filme mit Judy Garland und bin, im Gegensatz zu den vielen positiven Kommentaren hier, eher enttäuscht. Die deutsche Synchronfassung scheint übrigens wesentlich besser zu sein, als die Fassung im Original. Man muss ein direktes Vorwissen besitzen um überhaupt mitzukommen, denn sonst kann man vieles nicht verstehen. Weder sieht der Junge im Film aus wie Mickey Rooney, noch erkennt man Louis B. Mayer als solchen. Letzterer kommt eher als pädophiler alter Lustmolch daher (Er streichelt der minderjährigen Judy am Busen herum, und will ihr Herz haben. was dem echten Louis B. Mayer (als damaliger Studioboss von Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) sicher nicht gerecht wird. Selbst die Mutter von Judy Garland wird hier völlig überzeichnet dargestellt. Mag sein, dass sie Judy Garland öfters Pillen gab um wach zu bleiben, aber als eine solche Drogenmama wird sie wohl nicht aufgetreten sein. Überhaupt ist dieser ganze Film eine einzige Katastrophe. Es geht nur um Drogenmissbrauch, Alkohol, eine kaputte Frau und ihre letzten Monate. Die Hauptdarstellerin singt selbst (Man hätte hier wenigstens die echte Judy Garland singen lassen können) das Orchester spielt viel zu dünn, zu modern und hat nicht ansatzweise den Sound eines Orchesters aus den 1960er Jahren. Hier bei YouTube gibt es genug Möglichkeiten, sich die echten Shows von der echten Judy Garland anzuschauen. Ein großer Unterschied. Ja, sie war schon seit ihrem letzten M-G-M-Film Summer Stock (1950) am Ende. Der erneute Versuch eines Comeback mit A Star is born (bei Warner Brothers 1954) blieb danach erfolglos. Auch A Child is waiting war nur ein mäßiger Erfolg in den 1960er Jahren. Einzig die TV-Shows brachten noch Erfolge, welche aber eher an ihre Glanzzeit in den 1940er Jahren erinnern sollten. Das sie mit 47 Jahren (1969) starb ist tragisch, aber am Ende eine Erlösung für Judy Garland gewesen. Fazit: Der Film Judy wird nur bei der Beleuchtung, dem Bühnenbild, dem gezeigten Theater, und den Film-Farben seiner Aufgabe gerecht. Inhaltlich und geschichtlich betrachtet leider nicnt. Deshalb Note: 5.
